Summers in Southern Oregon have become nightmarish with smoke filling the air, and the terror that one of the fires will make its way through the firefighters and into houses and towns. Many people live in constant readiness to evacuate at a moment's notice. Everyone suffers from the choking smoke.

Of course there is a silver lining in this macabre scene. The smoke, awful as it is to breathe,  creates a wondrous light as the sun sets, glowing red and gold over the still valley. On this evening in late July we stood on a hill in a vineyard at the edge of town and looked down on Jacksonville and the distant hills.
